CCL Training Center Schedule
Below is a schedule of the current course offerings at the CCL Training Center. To register for a class, click the appropriate link or call the Training Center at 212.888.5233.
All classes are one three-hour session per week for eight weeks and meet at the CCL Training Center (318 West 53rd St., second floor), unless otherwise specified.
Improv Level I - Say Yes to Saying Yes
8 weeks / 3 hours - $275

Saying Yes to Saying Yes focuses on the basics of comedic improvisation. Topics covered include: agreement (“yes and”), using the environment, basic narrative skills, active listening, understanding stage status, and making your fellow improviser look good. Students learn how to initiate scenes and create a solid foundation for scenic improvisation.
Improv Level II - Create A Scene

Making A Scene focuses entirely on the nuances of scenic improvisation. Students do scene after scene, learning to look for connections and patterns that give the scenes depth. Topics covered include: emotional and status initiations; using external game to enhance narrative while avoiding its pitfalls; finding the internal game of a scene; how to recognize the “what” and the “underlying truth” of a scene; and narrative pacing and resolution.
Improv Level III: Advanced Skills Workshop
8 Weeks / 3 Hours - $275
Prerequsites: Completion of Improv Level II or permission of Training Center staff.
Course Description: Take your skills to the next level with this advanced improv class. Scenes, narrative techniques and improvised music skills are explored. Character work is focuses on creating compelling, believable characters. Class culminates in a public performance on the CCL stage.

Improv Level III - Core Electives

Character Workshop

The Character Workshop focuses on how to create strong, compelling characters based on emotion and relationship to the environment. Students expand their character palate by strengthening their existing repertoire and learning how to instantly create strong, specific new characters. Topics covered include: physicalization of emotion and status; creating reality-based characters on the spot; committing to spontaneous character choices; and responding emotionally in character.
Storytelling Workshop

The Storytelling Workshop focuses on narrative. Students learn to create strong stories in any improvisational context, from conducted stories to scenes to full musicals. Topics covered include: creating strong and detailed platforms; identifying a significant event; finding and resolving conflict; using reincorporation to build patterns within a narrative; and crafting simple, satisfying resolutions.
Music Improv Level I - "Making Melody"

Making Melody focuses on building a strong foundation for the basics of musical improvisation. Topics covered include: creating organic melodies; how to remember a melody once it’s created; understanding and differentiating the common sections of song structure (verse, chorus, pre-chorus, bridge); and how to kick a rhyme’s behind.
Music Improv Level II - "Sing, Sing A Song"

Sing, Sing A Song focuses on the use of advanced song structures in building solid foundations for musical improvisation. Topics covered include: understanding song and rhyme structure; the tagline song; the duet; the trio; the opening number; the plot-song; the metaphor song; and the game song.

Drop-in Improv for Everyone (DIIE): Whatever your level and training, come by and have some fun every week! Different teachers, different games, short form, long form, intermediate form.
Teen Improv Class
10 weeks / 3 hours - $350
Teen Improv classes are designed for ages 12-17, with or without prior theatre or improv experience. Students will have the opportunity to explore their abilities as performers, improve self-confidence, and just have fun. They will learn techniques of improv with some on New York’s finest improv performers, creating material from their own experience and outside suggestions, to be exhibited on the final day of class.
